Why it matters. In California a company may do only the kinds of pest control its registration covers: Branch 1 fumigation, Branch 2 general pest, Branch 3 termite (Bus. & Prof. Code 8560). Only Branch 3 companies may write the termite report for a home sale, and only Branch 1 companies may tent a house.

Common questions

Does a pest control company need a license in California?

Yes. A company must be registered with the Structural Pest Control Board (Bus. & Prof. Code 8550 and 8610), and the people who inspect and treat need their own operator, field representative or applicator licenses. Each branch office needs a licensed branch supervisor.

What are Branch 1, 2 and 3?

Branch 1 is fumigation with lethal gases (tenting), Branch 2 is general household pests such as ants, roaches and rodents, and Branch 3 is termites and other wood-destroying organisms (Bus. & Prof. Code 8560). A company may do only the branches it is registered for.

Who can write a termite report for a home sale?

Only a company registered for Branch 3, with the inspection made by a licensed Branch 3 operator or field representative. The report must be delivered within 10 business days from the start of the inspection (Bus. & Prof. Code 8516).

Do I have to be told what pesticide will be used?

Yes. Before treatment the company must give the owner and any tenant a written notice naming the pest, the pesticide and its active ingredient, with the state's caution statement. For fumigation it must come at least 48 hours ahead (Bus. & Prof. Code 8538).

Are pest control companies bonded and insured?

Registered companies must keep a $12,500 surety bond (Bus. & Prof. Code 8697) and liability insurance of at least $500,000 per loss for bodily injury and $500,000 for property damage (8692). Ask for a certificate of insurance.

Why is there no phone number?

The board's public file doesn't include phone numbers. Use the form on a listing and we pass your message on, or ask the company to claim its listing and add its details.
